Information culture
Information culture is a component of modern society based on the principle that he who owns the information, owns the world. It is the information that influences people's behavior and consciousness through the media, the Internet or other modern telecommunications technologies. That is why it is very important for every single man to have his knowledge and skills of professional written and oral information culture.
This course is designed for students who want to develop their information culture so that to achieve their personal and professional success in our global society. The academic discipline is taught in English so that to form students’ communicative speech competences to ensure their effective communication in the academic and professional environment.
All classes geared toward developing speaking, listening, reading and writing skills of students are organized as a speaking club with debates, quizzes, presentations, teamwork, etc. in a friendly learning environment and based on participants’ feedback.
The course consists of two learning modules. When learning the first module students will know the following:
- the essence of the discipline, its definitions and components, as well as relationships of information culture with other scientific disciplines;
- legal and ethical regulation of functioning information culture in Ukraine and abroad, as well as ergonomic requirements to its using;
- the essence of information culture as a factor of an organization's effective management;
- specific of the information processing in the scientific activities of students.
After learning the second module students will have knowledge and skills of professional writing and oral communication including secrets of public speaking, strategies of successful employment, critical thinking, media manipulation, information retrieval and security, etc.
As a result of having studied the course, students should have theoretical knowledge and practical skills of using the information culture in their future professions. They are taught how to:
- critically analyze, systemize, generalize, identify the information they need from different media and information sources, as well as to search, process, keep, evaluate and apply it for enhancing their professional fields of activities by using media and information immunity and creativity;
- apply the information culture of managers in different situations in the workplace;
- prepare bachelor or master thesis abstract as a result of processing scientific information;
- conduct international correspondence in professional fields of activities;
- prepare documents for obtaining international grants;
- use information culture for public speaking in the workplace;
- apply search technologies in information service as a component of information literacy;
- use computer competence in the field of information security in the workplace;
- create electronic information products (periodicals, advertising, etc.) in the workplace.
Teaching the course in the English language is geared toward developing professionally-oriented foreign language competence of students which is an obligatory factor of their adapting in the global information society to meet its modern requirements.
