The objective of the EVAL project is to create a demonstrator of a passive cooling system (utilizing loop heat pipe technology) for effective thermal management of bleed air system valves in Ultra-High Bypass Ratio (UHBR) aircraft engines, which are exposed to high temperatures.
EVAL is a project funded by the Clean Sky 2 Joint Undertaking. The project's Topic Manager from the Clean Sky 2 side is Liebherr, a leading European manufacturer of thermal management systems for the aviation and space industries. The results of the EVAL project will be used by Liebherr and integrated into a real UHBR engine demonstrator for passenger aircraft developed under the Clean Sky 2 initiative.
The innovative EVAL passive cooling system will ensure reliable and efficient operation of next-generation passenger aircraft engines throughout their entire service life. Thus, the implementation of the EVAL project will contribute to achieving the global goals of the Clean Sky 2 program.
This project has received funding from the Clean Sky 2 Joint Undertaking under the European Union’s Horizon 2020 research and innovation program, Grant Agreement No. 886615.

Project Concept:
The project aims to create a cooling solution based on a loop heat pipe (LHP) - a reliable, miniaturized two-phase heat transfer device used in electronics, aviation, and astronautics.
The innovative EVAL cooling system concept consists of a combination of:
- New working fluids capable of meeting the requirements for cooling bleed air system valves while simultaneously complying with aviation standards;
- Allatherm’s patented modular evaporator-reservoir unit technology (ALTOM), which allows for the creation of compact, lightweight, reliable, and cost-effective thermal management systems with excellent heat engineering characteristics;
- Innovative technology for field-filling the loop heat pipe with working fluid.
Key advantages of the EVAL solution over active two-phase cooling systems:
- Minimal weight, with no heavy components such as pumps;
- Compact and flexible design; the ALTOM modular architecture can be easily adapted to the aircraft engine;
- High reliability, proven by a large number of applications;
- No power extraction, being a fully passive system.
