As early as the 1930s, during the design of the KhAI-1 aircraft, students actively participated in the creation of aviation technology. The KhAI Student Design Bureau has been operating since 1959. During this time, more than 60 aircraft of various types were built at KhAI, alongside several unfinished projects. The students’ motto of those years was: “Build and Fly!”
The purpose of the KhAI Student Design Bureau:
The purpose of the KhAI Student Design Bureau is to carry out technical developments of aviation equipment, tools, and production and repair technologies, with extensive involvement of students in the practical resolution of educational, operational, and social tasks. It also aims to increase students’ interest in innovations in technological progress and the development of technologies in specific fields of science and industry.
The main tasks of the KhAI Student Design Bureau are:
- within the framework of students’ practical training, to carry out real developments and exploratory work based on agreements with enterprises and organizations of various forms of ownership;
- to fulfill university orders;
- to participate in the educational process, including conducting industrial internships, diploma, and course project work;
- to promote the latest achievements in science and technology, as well as the best developments of KhAI Student Design Bureau, through mass media, exhibitions, conferences, and seminars.
The functions of the KhAI Student Design Bureau are:
- conducting design work on the creation of manned and unmanned aircraft for various purposes, specialized equipment, and production and repair technologies;
- carrying out practical work to determine the actual flight, technical, and operational characteristics of aircraft at airfield conditions in cooperation with organizations authorized to perform such work;
- organizing lectures on aircraft piloting theory and ground training to promote the University’s activities and complement the educational process;
- performing technical and design work in other fields;
- providing consultations to students during the development of course and diploma projects;
- offering consultations to enterprises, organizations, and private individuals in the field of technical activities, including expertise on technical projects, developments, and ideas.
The KhAI Student Design Bureau includes:
