Second day of NATO workshop: KhAI presented an international scientific project in the field of unmanned systems.
The second day of the Cluster Workshop of the NATO Science for Peace and Security (SPS) Program “Unmanned and Autonomous Systems” was dedicated to presentations of promising international projects in the field of unmanned and autonomous systems. It was on this day that a joint scientific project of the National Aerospace University “Kharkiv Aviation Institute” and the University of Arizona was presented - “System of Satellites, Stratospheric Sailplanes, and Drones for Intelligence, Surveillance and Reconnaissance in Multiple Domains”.
The project involves the creation of a multi-level system in which satellites provide global communication, stratospheric gliders perform the functions of long-term observation platforms and air repeaters, and drones solve local reconnaissance tasks.
One of the main innovations is the use of dynamic soaring technology - autonomous flight with energy from atmospheric flows. This allows the glider to stay in the air for dozens of hours practically without using the power plant. The system is complemented by GPS-denied navigation technology, which ensures reliable operation even in conditions of suppression of satellite navigation signals.
As part of the project, the KhAI team designed, manufactured and successfully conducted flight tests of its own glider. The university is also developing autonomous navigation and autonomous flight control technologies, which are important components of modern unmanned aviation systems.
The presentation aroused considerable interest among the workshop participants. During the discussion, several promising areas for further international cooperation were proposed.
The workshop ended with group discussions devoted to topical issues of the development and application of unmanned systems. Ukrainian experience in using drones and creating modern autonomous technologies became one of the important sources of practical recommendations that will be taken into account when preparing the final report of the event.
