It was on August 29, 2014 that columns of Ukrainian soldiers leaving the Ilovaisk encirclement through the agreed “green corridor” were treacherously shot by Russian troops. Hundreds of Ukrainian defenders died among the sunflower fields.
Since then, August 29 has been the Day of Remembrance of the Defenders of Ukraine, who died in the fight for its independence, sovereignty and territorial integrity.
This day is not only about the pain of the past. It is about our memory and responsibility to those who gave the most precious thing for Ukraine — their lives. Thanks to those who live today, our state continues to exist and we have the opportunity to talk about its future.
The war that began in 2014 turned into a full-scale invasion in 2022. And today, Ukrainian soldiers continue to defend our land, freedom and Ukraine’s right to be free every day.
Our duty is to remember everyone. To honor the fallen. To tell about them to future generations. To not allow the names of those who paid the highest price for Ukraine to be erased from history.
