Compromising Positions Tech Podcast

Associate Professor of the Department of Cybersecurity and Intelligent Information Technologies No. 503 of the National Aerospace University "Kharkiv Aviation Institute", guarantor of the educational and professional program "Cybersecurity" Oleg ILLYSHENKO took part in the British Compromising Positions Tech Podcast as an invited expert on cybersecurity of nuclear infrastructure.

The episode was prepared for the 40th anniversary of the Chernobyl disaster and was dedicated to the modern rethinking of risks in the nuclear sector, taking into account the experience of Chernobyl, the accident at the Fukushima Daiichi NPP and the current challenges of cybersecurity of critical infrastructure.

The podcast hosts - well-known experts Lianne Potter and Jeff Watkins, as well as invited expert Bec McKeown CPsychol, who specializes in cognitive readiness to respond to cyber crises and extremely dangerous situations, took part in the discussion. During the conversation, not only the technical aspects of possible cyberattacks on nuclear facilities were considered, but also the issues of information reliability, decision-making in crisis conditions, organizational culture, the human factor and the stability of management systems.

Oleg ILLYSHENKO separately emphasized that modern cyber risks for nuclear infrastructure are not necessarily associated with scenarios of direct physical destruction. It was noted that threats associated with data compromise, manipulation of information flows, breach of trust in monitoring systems and influence on the decisions of operators and managers in critical situations are much more realistic.

These problems are related to the topic of his doctoral dissertation, which is dedicated to the development of a methodology for creating complex multi-level security management systems — information, cyber and functional — in critical industries.

The participation of a representative of a leading department of KhAI in such a respected expert discussion confirms the effectiveness and international recognition of the achievements of scientific and educational work in the field of IT security of critical infrastructure and the training of specialists capable of working with complex risks at the intersection of technology, management and security.
