Mykola BIELAN's scientific school

General characteristics of the scientific school

The scientific school of Mykola Vasylyovych Bielan is a multi-vector scientific direction that provides the scientific foundations for the creation of plasma generators and accelerators for space propulsion systems and technological purposes. It was founded in 1965. The school became the foundation and is aimed at the creation and development of electric propulsion thrusters (EPT), ion-plasma technologies (IPT), and power plants for their supply. The research covers various types of electric spacecraft thrusters, various types of autonomous power plants and power supply systems, and technological equipment for ion-plasma deposition of functional coatings.

Founder of the scientific school

Bielan Mykola Vasylyovych (28.07.1937 – 17.06.2006) – Doctor of Technical Sciences (1976), Professor (1978). Graduated from Kharkiv Aviation Institute (1960). Founder and first Dean of the Faculty of Rocket and Space Technology (1980), Head of the Department of Engines and Power Plants of Spacecraft (1976–2006), Director of the Interbranch Scientific and Technical Center "Space Energy and Engines" (ISTC SEE) at KhAI. Honored Worker of Higher Education of Ukraine, laureate of the USSR Council of Ministers Prize, Academician of the Engineering Academy of Ukraine, awarded the Order of the "Badge of Honor", "Honorary Worker of the Space Industry of Ukraine", and numerous medals.

The main scientific directions of the school are:

1. Theory and design of electric propulsion thrusters and propulsion systems.

2. Development of theoretical foundations and technology for creating hollow cathodes and increasing their service life.

3. Creation of vacuum ion-plasma technologies and technological installations.

4. Surface modification and deposition of multifunctional (wear-resistant, decorative) coatings based on ion-plasma technologies.

5. Autonomous space and ground-based power plants and power supply systems.

6. Energy management.

Scientific achievements and performance results

Under the direct supervision and consultation of the head of the school, 4 Doctors of Sciences and 27 Candidates of Sciences were trained. A line of stationary plasma thrusters (SPT), hollow non-incandescent cathodes (NIC), and new methods for their accelerated testing were developed. The school's technologies have been implemented at enterprises of the aviation, rocket-space, and machine-building industries.

Main publications and scientific projects of the school

Over 400 scientific papers have been published, and about 100 author's certificates and patents have been obtained. The school actively cooperates with international partners, including projects with France, China, and the Netherlands.
