National Aerospace University «Kharkiv Aviation Institute»

KHAI during the war

The National Aerospace University “Kharkiv Aviation Institute” was one of the first institutions in Kharkiv to face the war. KHAI is located in the northern part of the city, less than 30 kilometers from the border with Russia.

Near the university, at an intersection, on February 27, 2022, a battle took place with a russian sabotage and reconnaissance group (SRG) in front of KHAI staff and residents of nearby buildings, who were hiding in the university’s bomb shelter.

Overall, russian troops carried out over 180 strikes on the university territory. Every building, dormitory, and storage and utility facility was affected.

The university’s shelter accommodated more than 2,000 people, adults and children.

Almost from the first days, communication with volunteers was established, who provided hot meals, clothing, and hygiene supplies. During the first months of the full-scale Russian   invasion, the National Aerospace University “Kharkiv Aviation Institute” was practically the only shelter for hundreds of local residents.

Despite all the attempts of the russian invaders, KHAI endured and once again opened its doors for students. Regardless of the circumstances, all 7 faculties of the university continue to operate, teach students online, organize events, and involve youth in seminars, forums, online meetings, and webinars even under martial law.

At KHAI, music is playing again – the KHAI Wind Orchestra holds charity online concerts, collecting donations to support the needs of the Armed Forces of Ukraine.

Waking up on February 24, 2022, to the sound of explosions, KHAI students and staff, along with all Ukrainians, took up the defense of their land. Every day, heroes defend Ukraine on the front lines and in the rear. The National Aerospace University “Kharkiv Aviation Institute” sincerely thanks the courage and bravery of its staff and students who are now protecting our country.

Unfortunately, many of our heroes have fallen forever in the fight against the russian invasion.

To honor the memory of those from KHAI who gave their lives for our independence, a virtual memorial of those who died in the war with Russia was created. Eternal memory to the heroes and deepest respect!
