J6 Aviation Transport

Aviation Transport is a complex engineering, technological, and operational management field responsible for the safe, efficient, and seamless operation, maintenance, flight organization, airport operations, and air traffic management.

Unlike Aerospace Design (G12), where the focus is shifted to designing aircraft "from scratch," specialty J6 focuses on the operational life cycle: how to maintain an aircraft in airworthy condition (EASA Part-145/Part-M), how to efficiently organize air transportation, manage airport ground services, and ensure air navigation and aviation safety.

The training of specialists in aviation transport is built around the following key focus areas:

- aircraft and their systems: passenger and cargo airplanes, helicopters, unmanned aerial systems (UAS), aircraft engines, airframes, avionics, and onboard electronic systems;

- maintenance, repair, and overhaul (MRO): routine maintenance, diagnostics, restoring airworthiness, and maintenance planning according to EASA / FAA / State Aviation Administration standards;

- flight operations and air navigation: piloting procedures, air traffic management (ATM), communication, navigation, and surveillance systems (CNS/ATM), risk management, and human factors (CRM);

- airport complexes and infrastructure: airfield systems, ground handling, aviation security, passenger and cargo handling;

- continuing airworthiness management (CAMO): reliability analysis, detailed part-life tracking, certification requirements, and compliance with flight safety management systems (SMS).

Educational goals by higher education levels:

First (Bachelor's) level — training engineers and specialists in aviation transport capable of solving complex specialized and practical tasks in technical or flight operation of aircraft, maintenance of aviation equipment, and airport systems.

Main focuses of Bachelor's degree training:

- mastering the structure of aircraft, aircraft engines, avionics, and electrical systems;

- mastering maintenance technologies, using diagnostic equipment and specialized tools;

- studying international aviation law regulations (ICAO, EASA), flight safety norms, and flight/technical operation documentation;

- organizing ground services at airports, air transport logistics, and security management.

Second (Master's) level — training leaders, senior engineers, and scientists capable of solving complex problems and challenges in aviation transport, involving research, innovation implementation, and management under conditions of uncertain requirements.

Main focuses of Master's degree training:

- managing continuing airworthiness management organizations (CAMO) and quality management systems in airlines and MRO organizations;

- implementing intelligent diagnostic systems and real-time health and usage monitoring systems (HUMS);

- optimizing air navigation systems, managing air traffic flows, and developing safe flight routes;

- managing aviation projects, auditing flight safety, investigating aviation accidents, and conducting scientific research.

Third (Educational-Scientific) level — training highly qualified scientific and academic staff capable of conducting fundamental and applied research, developing new theories, methods, and innovative technologies to enhance the efficiency, reliability, and safety of aviation transport under conditions of uncertainty.

Main focuses of Doctor of Philosophy (PhD) training:

- scientific research in the fields of aircraft reliability theory, optimization of maintenance processes, and ergonomics (human factors) in aviation;

- mathematical modeling of complex air navigation systems, air traffic flows, and airport logistics hubs;

- publishing research results in international scientometric journals (Scopus / Web of Science) and patent-licensing activities;

- academic teaching activities in higher education institutions, leading research and development (R&D) as well as experimental technology projects.

Key graduate competencies:

- Maintenance, Repair, and Overhaul (MRO / Part-145) — performing routine maintenance, troubleshooting onboard systems, and conducting technical diagnostics;

- Continuing Airworthiness (CAMO / Part-M) — developing maintenance programs, monitoring part lifespans, and liaising with aviation authorities;

- Air Navigation and Traffic Management — flight planning, working with air traffic control systems, and ensuring compliance with ICAO/EASA procedures;

- Flight Safety (SMS) — implementing and auditing safety management systems, analyzing flight data (FDM/FOQA);

- Airport Management — coordinating ground handling operations, managing airfield support services, and overseeing aviation security.

Graduates of Specialty J6 Aviation Transport form the backbone of operational and technical activities in civil and state aviation:

- airlines (passenger and cargo): CAMO Engineer, Flight Safety Specialist, Flight Dispatcher;

- maintenance and repair organizations (MRO): Aviation Engineer / Technician for airframe, engines, and avionics maintenance (EASA Part-66 License), Workshop/Laboratory Head;

- international and regional airports: Airfield Infrastructure Maintenance Engineer, Ground Handling Manager, Aviation Security Specialist;

- air navigation service providers: Air Navigation System Support Specialist (UkSATSE, etc.), Air Traffic Controller (subject to obtaining the relevant license);

- government bodies and regulatory agencies: Inspector at the State Aviation Administration of Ukraine, Aircraft Accident Investigation Expert;

- unmanned aviation: operator, engineer for operation and maintenance of heavy and specialized UAVs;

- science and education (for Master's degree holders): researcher at aviation research institutes, lecturer in higher aviation education institutions.

Training is provided by the Department of Airplane and Helicopter Design (Department 103).
