The Department was founded in 1972 within the Faculty of Aircraft Engine Engineering under the name “Department of Power Plants and Engines of Space Vehicles.” In 2011, the Department was merged with the Department of Rocket Engineering, and in 2014 it was separated again under its current name — the Department of Space Technology and Non-Traditional Energy Sources.

The Department of Space Technology and Non-Traditional Energy Sources has a strong material, technical, and research base, as well as a highly qualified academic staff, which makes it possible to provide full higher education in the following specialties:
G12 “Aviation and Rocket and Space Technology” (Educational Program “Rocket and Space Technology”, major “Satellites, Plasma Engines, and Space Power Systems”), and
G4 “Energy Production” with specialization G4.03 “Renewable Energy Sources and Hydropower” (Educational Program “Non-Traditional and Renewable Energy Sources”).

Students of the Department are regular winners of international competitions and Olympiads.

The long-standing experience of the Department’s staff enables students to participate in real programs of international and Ukrainian research projects, including: Dnipro, FP-7, SM-KI, Sich, Okean, Microsatellite, EgyptSat-1, and Microsat. Students’ developments have been incorporated into the TEMPUS-CRIST project “Educational Reform in Aerospace Technology of Ukraine.” Active student involvement in research activities is reflected in the annual scientific and technical conference “Modern Problems of Rocket and Space Technology and Engineering.”

The Department trains Bachelor’s and Master’s degree students in the following specialties:

G12 “Aviation and Rocket and Space Technology” (educational-professional and educational-scientific programs “Rocket and Space Technology”, major “Satellites, Plasma Engines, and Space Power Systems”);
G4 “Energy Production” with specialization G4.03 “Renewable Energy Sources and Hydropower” (educational-professional program “Non-Traditional and Renewable Energy Sources”).
Training of highly qualified specialists (PhD) is carried out at the Department in the specialty G11 “Mechanical Engineering”, educational and scientific program “Power Engineering”, major “Space Engines and Power Systems and Non-Traditional Energy Sources.”
