Geodesy and Land Management is a comprehensive engineering and legal field that combines precise measurement of spatial coordinates, digital mapping, geographic information systems (GIS), remote sensing of the Earth (RSE), as well as the legal protection and rational use of land resources.
Specialists in this field create the spatial foundation for construction, transport infrastructure, urban planning, the agricultural sector, mineral extraction, and the maintenance of the State Land Cadastre.
The training of specialists in geodesy and land management is built around the following key focus areas:
- land plots and land management objects: territorial boundaries, lands of all categories, land use systems, and land valuation;
- geospatial data and cadastres: State Land Cadastre (SLC), urban planning cadastre, geographic information systems (ArcGIS, QGIS);
- topographic and geodetic instruments and technologies: electronic total stations, laser scanners, GNSS receivers (GPS/GLONASS/Galileo), and UAVs for aerial photography;
- mapping materials: topographic and thematic maps, digital site plans, three-dimensional (3D) terrain and landscape models;
- change monitoring: tracking structural deformations of engineering works, landslides, land cover changes, and rational land use.
Educational goals by higher education levels:
First (Bachelor's) level — developing students' ability to solve complex specialized problems in geodesy and land management, conduct field measurements, process data in office settings, and prepare documentation.
Main focuses of Bachelor's degree training:
- mastering skills with modern surveying equipment (total stations, GNSS systems, optical/digital levels);
- developing land management documentation, cadastral plans, and documents for registering land rights;
- applying specialized software (Digitals, AutoCAD, ArcGIS, QGIS) for data processing and map compilation;
- performing surveying work in construction and staking out land plot boundaries on site.
Second (Master's) level — training specialists and managers capable of solving complex research or innovative problems in geodesy, cadastre, GIS, and spatial planning of territories.
Main focuses of Master's degree training:
- developing comprehensive spatial planning schemes for territorial communities, urban planning documentation, and master plans;
- applying Earth remote sensing methods (aerial and satellite imagery, photogrammetry) for environmental and agricultural monitoring;
- managing large spatial databases, developing and implementing corporate and municipal GIS;
- expert monetary valuation of land, cadastral audit, and land investment project management.
Key graduate competencies:
- Geodesy and Topography — performing high-precision measurements, construction layout support, and surveying for infrastructure design;
- Land Management and Cadastre — preparing land management documentation, cadastral surveying, and state registration of land plots;
- GIS and Cartography — creating digital maps, analyzing spatial data, developing GIS applications and web maps (ArcGIS, QGIS);
- Remote Sensing and UAVs — processing photogrammetric data, laser scanning (LiDAR), and interpreting drone aerial imagery;
- Land Valuation — conducting normative and expert monetary valuations of land plots and real estate.
Graduates of Specialty G18 Geodesy and Land Management are in demand in both the public sector and private business:
- land management and surveying companies: Certified Land Surveying Engineer, Certified Surveyor;
- construction and real estate development industries: Surveying Engineer for buildings, roads, bridges, tunnels, and pipelines;
- government bodies and local self-government: specialist at the State GeoCadastre, departments of architecture, urban planning, and land resources in amalgamated territorial communities (OTGs);
- GIS sector and IT: GIS Specialist, GIS Analyst, geographic information systems developer in private and international companies;
- agricultural holdings and mining industry: Precision Agriculture GIS Engineer, Mine Surveyor in open-pit quarries and underground mines;
- science and education (for Master's degree holders): researcher at research institutes, lecturer in higher education institutions.
